The Georgia State Patrol has reported that 24 people were killed on Georgia highways this past holiday weekend, according to Joe Johnson of the Athens Banner-Herald online. The Patrol had predicted 19 traffic-related deaths, 2,945 accidents, and 1,494 injuries in Georgia for the 102-hour holiday travel period (which began on Christmas Eve at 6:00 p.m), but actual numbers proved higher for accidents: 3,325 accidents were reported for the time period. Though only 868 crash-related injuries were reported, the two-dozen fatality count made the holiday travel season devastating for some. As for finding the cause of such high numbers of traffic fatalities, patrol Lt. Allen Marlow says that Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) officials plan to analyze reports from Georgia sheriff's offices, police departments, and Georgia State Patrol posts. Lt. Marlowe was unsure at the time of the report how many of the wrecks were caused by drunk drivers, but that number will also be measured and released by the GOHS.
