Residents of
DeKalb County continue to place flowers and teddy bears at the site of the tragic death of a 7-year-old boy who was killed while walking in a crosswalk from his neighborhood to school this morning, according to Channel 2 Action News. The station reported that Cameron Dunmore was killed on his way to Princeton Elementary School when an SUV failed to stop, even though a crossing guard was present and traffic was stopped, at the dangerous intersection and hit him. The driver of the SUV, 40-year-old Shirley Ogilvie, was driving her own child to school when the
pedestrian accident occurred, and Channel 2 reported that she was so traumatized by the crash that she was taken to the hospital and sedated. According to the station, she will be charged with
vehicular homicide and failing to yield to a child in a crosswalk.
Although no other children were in the crosswalk at the time of the
Lithonia accident,
DeKalb County residents who came to the accident scene to show sympathy told Channel 2 action news that they were worried about the interesection not having a traffic light. They said that there used to be a light at that location, but it was removed, and they were told that a crossing guard was "enough." One resident reported that she and other concerned parents have been saying that it would take the death of one of their kids to get a traffic light up again. According to Aungelique Proctor and Steve Dixon of the My Fox Atlanta website, Cameron Dunmore was pronounced dead as he was being transported to the hospital. We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Cameron Dunmore as they mourn his
wrongful death. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you or if you have any questions you would like answered for free.
