The Georgia Senate finally approved legislation requiring the use of seat belts in pickup trucks. Recently, Georgia required front seat passengers of all vehicles besides pickup trucks to buckle up. Georgia’s rural legislators have debated for years whether or not pickup trucks should be required to wear seat belts because wearing a seat belt is an inconvenience for farmers and farm workers who frequently get in and out of their pickup truck as they work on the fields.
The Georgia Senate approved the bill on a 45-2 vote. The bill exempts off road vehicles and pickup trucks used for farming.
According to the Georgia Senate, more than half of pickup truck fatal accidents resulted from passengers not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Passage of this bill is expected to save twenty five-million dollars in Medicaid expenses over a 10-year period. If the bill becomes law, Georgia will become eligible for federal highway funding assistance that was being withheld until this legislation passed.
Complications can arise in accident cases when it is determined than an injured victim was not wearing a seat belt. If you or a family member has been hurt and did not have a seat belt fastened, please feel free to call us for a free consultation at (770) 577-3020.

Title: Federal Ban On Texting for Commercial Truck Drivers
Recent news release from the U.S. Department of Transportation announces a federal ban prohibiting commercial vehicle drivers from texting. This action from the U.S. Department of Transportation is part of a larger effort in the fight against distracted driving.
Commercial truck drivers and bus drivers who are caught texting while driving may be subject to criminal penalties of up to $2,750.00 and civil penalties. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, those who are texting while driving have their eyes off the road 4.6 seconds out of every 6 seconds. In other words this is equivalent to a driver going 55 miles an hour for the distance of a football field without looking at the road.
In September 2009 during the Distracted Driving Summit, President Obama signed an Executive Order directing all federal employees to not engage in texting while operating government owned vehicles or equipment. All federal employees were required to comply by December 2009.

Event: Truck Accident in Georgia
Early this morning, a tractor trailer truck was traveling southbound on Interstate 85 in Coweta County. The tractor trailer overturned in the exact location where two other tractor trailer wrecks occurred in March 2009. At the time of the incident, the tractor trailer truck was hauling double trailers and wrecked north of Collinsworth Road in Coweta County.
The tractor trailer accident happened in a two lane section of Interstate 85 where construction was in progress. Fortunately, there was not a concrete barrier on the right side of the interstate in the area were the incident occurred. Instead of a concrete barrier there was a dirt shoulder with a drop off of several inches between the pavement and the shoulder.
Following two truck accidents last week, one being a fatality and the other involving two trucks that burst into flames near Northgate High School, Georgia State Officials lowered the speed limit along Interstate 85. The speed limit was lowered to 50 mph and it stretches from Ga. Highway 74 in Fairburn south to the Meriwether County line.
The truck accident was investigated by The Coweta County Sheriff's Office.

If you drive a pickup truck, an old yet important phrase must become etched in your memory before you start your vehicle: buckle up. According to Shawn Reynolds of the 11 Alive news website, the Georgia Senate voted 49-4 Thursday to require adults riding in pickup trucks to buckle their seatbelts when on the roadway. Previously the only state in the nation to allow adults to remain unbuckled in pickup trucks, costing the state millions of federal highway dollars, Georgia finally acted to prevent an estimated 21 lives and 300 injuries annually.
If you are involved in a car or truck accident in which you are not wearing your seatbelt, this new law could affect your potential car or truck accident case, not to mention your overall safety. To ensure that you are as safe as possible as well as abide by the law, be sure to "buckle up" no matter what vehicle you choose for driving or riding.
