We recently posted a blog about a police officer who sustained injuries in a Clayton County motorcycle accident.  According to an update from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the crash, which occurred last week, involved two Clayton County police officers and is still under investigation.

The officer we previously wrote about, Officer Thrift, reportedly sustained injuries to his leg and foot and had to be flown to Grady Memorial Hospital last Thursday.  According to the police report, the accident occurred when the other officer, identified as Officer Sawyer, attempted a U-turn while driving south on Tara Blvd. at its intersection with Cardinal Rd.  As Officer Sawyer was navigating his turn, Officer Thrift's motorcycle crashed into the rear bumper of Sawyer's vehicle.

Although Thrift was ejected from his Honda motorcycle and stated that Sawyer pulled in front of him, it is not known if an at-fault driver has been identified or if any charges have been filed in this incident.

Motorcycle Accidents: When Enjoyable Rides Turn into Tragedy

Riding on a motorcycle, whether for your first open-air joy ride or for your daily means of transportation, can be an exhilarating experience.  No matter how freeing it feels with the wind in your face, however, a motorcycle accident can turn all of that excitement into tragedy.  On a daily basis, drivers in cars, SUVs, or trucks, unknowingly pull out of motorcycle riders, often striking them with such impact that the motorcyclists become severely injured.  Though these drivers typically claim they did not see the motorcycles in their paths, some of them cause the accidents due to lack of attention to the road; in other words, many drivers would see nearby motorcycles if they paid attention to the road and their surroundings.  Sadly, this kind of daily occurrence results in numerous fatalities annually.  If you have been injured or lost a friend or family member in a motorcycle accident, it is important to contact an experienced personal injury  and wrongful death attorney should you choose to claim compensation for your losses.  We at Murphy & Associates have seen the trauma and tragedy clients face after the loss of a loved one, and we will answer all of your questions for free with compassion and professionalism should you choose to call us.  If you live in the metro Atlanta area or your accident occurred in Georgia, feel free to call us with your most pressing questions.  770-577-3020.

Douglasville Motorcycle Accident Claims Life of Sheriff's Deputy

Often unseen or overlooked by other drivers due to the smaller size of their vehicles, motorcyclists are more likely to be involved in accidents than other drivers. Due to inadequate protection from serious injury, motorcycle accident victims often suffer serious, long-term, or even catastrophic injuries.  Monday evening, a Douglasville motorcycle accident claimed the life of one of Fulton County's most dedicated sheriff's deputies.

The Douglasville motorcycle accident killed Fulton County sheriff's deputy Keith James Draper on Monday night, December 8, according to the WSBTV website.  The site reports that 43-year-old Draper crashed his motorcycle on Lee Road near his Douglasville home.  The deputy worked with the Sheriff's Office for ten years, served on the Sheriff's Honor Guard, and was disciplined and very dedicated, according to Sheriff Myron E. Freeman, who also says that Deputy Draper was the "perfect example of what a deputy should be" and "will be truly missed by all . . ."  We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Keith Draper.  Our thoughts are with you at this most difficult time.

Carrollton Motorcyclist's Cell Phone Signals for Help After Accident

June 12, 2008 - You hear it frequently: don’t talk on your cell phone while driving. After an accident, however, your cell phone may be your very best "SOS." A Carrollton motorcyclist who ran off the road while traveling on Highway 166 on the evening of June 6 knows this lesson very well. According to the Times-Georgian, the cyclist used his cell phone to call his wife after the accident occurred, but he was not sure of his location, and his injuries prevented him from returning to the highway to get his bearings or find help there.

The call was lost quickly, but the man’s wife alerted authorities who then searched the roads he frequented: Highway 70 (in Fulton County) and Highway 166 (in both Carroll and Douglas counties). After enduring his pain throughout the night and into the morning of June 7, the Carrollton traveler made another call from his cell phone at 10:00am, enabling the police to determine his approximate location from the signal. Authorities used sirens to which the injured man responded via phone when they became closer. Though the accident victim’s leg and head were injured, he was in "good condition" at Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital later that morning.
