Two Bicycle Accidents in Carroll County in the Month of July

Two recent bicycle accidents in Carroll County have led some residents to believe that bicycle lanes might help cyclists from being injured.

In a hit and run accident, one cyclist is recovering from a separated shoulder after being hit by a pickup truck. The injured cyclist knew he was hit by a pickup but could not identify the driver or his truck with any further details. Another cyclist who was recently injured was able to identify the driver that hit him. The driver was charged with aggravated assault and criminal damage to property.

It was reported that neither of the injured cyclists believes that designated bike lanes would have prevented their accidents.  But many local Carroll County residents believe the creation of bike lanes would help prevent serious injuries such as these.

Bicycle Hit and Run Accident in Carrollton

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a pick-up truck struck a bicyclist on Tyus-Carrollton Road. The truck left the scene of the accident. The bicyclist was transported to Tanner Medical Center for a separated shoulder, cuts and abrasions. The rear tire of the bicycle was dislodged as a result of the accident.

The Georgia State Patrol is still investigating, and charges will likely be filed when the driver of the truck is located.

Driver Charged in Pedestrian Accident in Marietta, Georgia

According to the Marietta Police Department, the driver who hit a 21-year old pedestrian has been charged in the accident that occurred at the intersection of Powder Springs Street and Bellemeade Drive. The driver, Catalina Santana-Valdez, 56 years of age, is charged with driving without a license and failure to yield to a pedestrian. The charge of serious injury by a motor vehicle is pending due to the condition of the pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and was in critical condition.

The Marietta Police Department is still investigating the accident.

Emory Student Injured in Hit and Run Pedestrian Accident

On Friday, June 11, 2010, two teenagers were struck by a vehicle in Carrollton, Georgia. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the teenagers were walking along Holly Drive in Carrollton when they were struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, a thirty eight year old, was traveling southbound when he crossed over the northbound lane.

Both teenagers were transported to Atlanta Medical Center for medical treatment. One teenager passed away from injuries sustained in the accident. The other teenager has since been released.

The thirty eight year old male was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road, leaving the scene of the accident, endangerment to a child, serious injury by a vehicle and driving without a license. He is also facing charges of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. He was booked into the Carroll County Jail.

Georgia Resident Involved in Hit and Run Accident in Florida

On February 21, 2010, a Georgia resident was involved in a hit and run accident in Okaloosa County, Florida. According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Clarence Brasfield, 73 years of age, resident of Georgia, was the victim in the accident.

Vicky Ann Metrejean, resident of Niceville, Florida, has been charged with hitting Mr. Brasfield and leaving the scene of the accident. According to the sheriff’s office, Ms. Metrejean failed to stop after hitting Mr. Brasfield on John Sims Parkway.

Mr. Clarence Brasfield was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital from injuries sustained in the accident. He was listed in critical but stable condition.

Afterwards, a deputy at the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, received a telephone call stating a woman was passed out behind the wheel of an SUV. The SUV was at the gate of Destiny West Subdivision. The damage to the front of the vehicle was consistent with the hit and run accident. A black glove was found in the vehicle that matched the same glove found at the scene of the accident.

According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, additional charges are pending against Ms. Metrejean.

According to the Sandy Springs Police Department, a 4 year old boy and his 18 year old sister were hit by a vehicle on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, Georgia yesterday. The sister and her brother were crossing Roswell Road near Windsor Parkway and were standing in the reversible turning lane when they were both struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle entered the reversible turning lane the same time as both the sister and brother did.

The 4 year old boy was transported to Children’s Hospital in Sandy Springs, Georgia with serious head injuries sustained in the accident. The 18 year old sister received medical treatment at the scene of the accident and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. The sister appeared to be pregnant according to the paramedics on scene.

Yesterday afternoon on December 7, 2009, a eighty-five year old man was hit by a car at Lawrenceville Highway and Fellowship Road in Dekalb County. According to the Dekalb County Police, the driver of the vehicle, a eighty-three year old woman, was turning right when she hit him in the crosswalk. The pedestrian was transported to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition from the injuries sustained in the accident.

In the early morning hours on November 22,2009 a young man in Porterdale Georgia overheard a commotion outside his home. The young man then went out to find a man and woman who’s car was stuck in a ditch. The teen offered to help them and as he approached the vehicle a oncoming driver in a “black compact car”  going about 50 miles per hour struck the teen. The teenager suffered a knee laceration requiring a 100 stitches, multiple scrapes and bruises along with bruised ribs. He is able to use crutches but for short distances only and for any further distance requires a wheelchair.

Pedestrian Killed Crossing I-285 | Fatal Pedestrian Accident | Georgia Car Accident Attorney

In the early morning hours of Wednesday November 25, 2009, an unknown female pedestrian was fatally struck when crossing I-285 near Riverside Drive in Sandy Springs Georgia. The female, who died at the scene, was struck by an eighteen wheeler as she attempted to cross the eastbound lanes. Authorities are investigating and believe she had exited her vehicle which was found against the median wall close to the accident site. Traffic was diverted by authorities for several hours this morning causing major traffic delays.

The seventh-grader at Cedartown Middle School was struck while waiting on his bus to pick him up for school.
