A recent study conducted by Allstate Corp. and Sperling's BestPlaces ranked the cities with the safest (and worst) teen drivers during the New Year's holiday, according to Becky Yerack of The Chicago Tribune online. The study collected data of fatal accidents involving teens over the New Year's holiday across the U.S. for the years 2000 through 2007. Among discoveries was a correlation between rural, less populated areas and high numbers of fatal accidents. According to Sperling's President Bert Sperling, the correlation may be explained by accidents occurring at lower speeds in denser, larger cities due to traffic, which results in fewer fatalities than the high-speed accidents of less dense, rural areas.
Yerack reports that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety names car accidents as the "top killer" of teens in the United States, with over 5,000 teenagers per year losing their lives in fatal accidents.
