Wednesday morning (July 15) proved long for
Atlanta commuters on
I-85 due to a police investigation of a previous
accident involving fatality, according to the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution online. Although the morning rush hour sometimes ends around 9:30 a.m., the southbound lanes of
I-85 were still full of traffic Wednesday when the investigation began around 9:25 a.m., resulting in even more delays. According to the article, seven miles of the
interstate were at a nearly complete standstill and six lanes were blocked from Jimmy Carter Blvd. to State Rd. 316 in
Gwinnett County. Since the lack of light prevents police from conducting investigations at night, police typically schedule investigations between rush hours, but the traffic proved heavy even after the typical 9:30 a.m. decline in cars. Although no one disclosed which
fatal accident in particular the team was investigating, a spokesman from the
Gwinnett Police stated that the officers were revisiting the scene of a
fatal accident. The police reportedly left the scene shortly after 10:00 a.m., and all lanes were available for travel by 11:00 a.m.
