Holes in Post Road Bridge Over Dog River

June 3, 2008 - Western Douglas County experienced a case of shaky ground Saturday evening when a deputy discovered a dangerous two-foot-wide hole in the asphalt in one traffic lane on the Post Road bridge over Dog River. Due to the age of the bridge (57 years old) and its impending need for replacement (scheduled for sometime within the next five years), the Douglas County Department of Transportation and the Sheriff’s Office took precautionary measures and closed the bridge for evaluation.

Small roads nearby and Georgia Highway 5 have been suggested as detours for drivers who normally access the two-lane county road connecting them to Interstate 20 from southern Douglas County. In the meantime, the bridge will undergo further inspection, despite its acceptable sufficiency rating of 52.4 in 2004 (acceptable ratings are 50 and above to avoid replacement). Investigations will determine whether the bridge will simply be repaired or require more extensive care.
