December 30, 2007 - The Georgia Highway 61 bypass project that Villa Rica officials have worked on for years will be delayed further with a change in the scope of the project. About a year ago, the Federal Highway Administration requested the city conduct an updated traffic study to reassess the design of the project to possibly change its scope from a two-lane bypass to a four-lane bypass. The city agreed to reassess the conceptual design but recommended the project remain a two-lane bypass with a right-of-way for four lanes in the future. The original project was approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation. The project is being funded by state and federal highway funds and Villa Rica is charged with funding the engineering, design and right-of-way acquisition. The main goals for the bypass are removing truck traffic, providing an alternative route for emergency vehicles, and giving an alternate detour when the interstate is closed.
