Car Wreck in Webster County Leads to Capture of Inmate

A 19-year-old inmate of the Sumter County Jail, stole a detention officer's car and took off Tuesday evening, November 4, 2008, but crashed shortly thereafter in nearby Webster County.  According to the Georgia State Patrol which investigated the incident, a detention officer at the Sumter County Law Enforcement Center left her Honda Accord running with the keys inside. That's when inmate stole the car and began to flee.  Once the car was reported stolen, an emergency lockdown was placed in the jail while a head count was taken. The inmate was noted as missing and, shortly thereafter, the car was spotted in the town of Plains, and authorities in Webster County were notified. A deputy of the Webster County Sheriff's Dept. said that as soon as he was notified a deputy was dispatched and when the deputy went out the door, he saw a car matching the description of the vehicle traveling on U.S. Highway 280 at a high rate of speed. Reaching speeds as high as 125 mph, and evenually crashed near Enterprise Church Road on 280 West.  He was injured and taken to Columbus Medical Center.  Devorce now faces charges of vehicle theft and escape in Sumter County and will be charged with fleeing/attempting to elude, driving without a valid driver's license, and reckless driving in Webster County.  This report is according to the Americus Times Recorder,
