City Council debates one-way direction for Main Street in Villa Rica.

March 14, 2008 - Villa Rica’s plan to turn Main Street into a one-way street has been put on hold. One downtown property owner has expressed concerns for a proposal which was approved last month by the city council. The proposal would turn Main Street into a westbound one-way street. However, the city council was read a letter from a property owner who gave several reasons the proposal would cause more safety concerns and traffic problems at the intersection of Highway 61/Main Street/Temple Street/Highway 78. The proposal would also cause heavy traffic congestion due to more traffic entering the intersection and turning left onto Highway 78.

The measure for the one-way street was initially approved as a way to lessen traffic back-ups on Main Street at the major intersection. This intersection is a safety concern due to drivers pulling out in front of other vehicles at the multi-road intersection. According to the property owner, this is only a problem during small periods of time during each day, and is not a valid reason to make permanent changes to the street.

It was stated that "This proposed one-way of Main Street only addresses a condition that exists less than two hours per day and does not address the problem that will be created by the 24-hour per day, 7-day a week one-way of Main Street."

The council ultimately decided to have more discussion about the matter and put the project on hold.
