It is official! Governor Perdue signed the bill today, June 4, 2010 which makes it illegal for anyone to be texting while driving. Furthermore, any driver with a provisional license may not use a cell phone at all while operating a motor vehicle. While there were some concerns over this controversial bill, legislators are going to re-visit these issues next year.

Several people have hired me recently who were injured in truck and car accidents that occurred due to the at-fault parties using cell phones while driving. My message to you is this: please avoid using your cell phone while driving or, at least, use a hands-free device. Texting and dialing while navigating the road are especially dangerous activities. Why such a "fuss" about this issue?
Since we have become increasingly dependent on cell phones, the number of people using cell phones while driving has risen drastically over the past few years. According to the Insurance Information Institute, at least two dangers arise from using cell phones (for calls or text messaging) while driving. First of all, dialing requires drivers to take their eyes off the roadways. Second, phone calls cause drivers to focus on their conversations rather than concentrate on driving, which can significantly impair driving ability and reactions, putting the safety of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at-risk. According to the institute, recent research finds cell phone use while driving the most common cause of automobile accidents.
