According to the Coweta County Sheriff’s office, there have been fourteen fatal accidents on Coweta County roadways this year and the holiday season can be a dangerous time to travel on the highway. Last year, eight people died in car accidents in Coweta County and twelve people died in 2008. In the prior years, the number of fatal accidents averaged from twenty to thirty.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s office and Georgia State Patrol are increasing their sobriety checks and high visibility enforcement through the new year.

According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), in December 2009, 753 people were killed across the country in accidents involving drivers under the influence with illegal blood alcohol level of .08 or higher.
