Title: Vehicular Homicide: 30 Year Sentence
In August of 2008 Otuwa Otuwa was operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was traveling at a high rate of speed on Lee Road near Old lee Road in Lithia Springs when his car left the road and struck a tree. Unfortunately Otuwa age 24 was not alone in the vehicle. His sister, Gracie Otuwa and a friend of her’s Andre Robert Houston were passengers in that vehicle and were killed. On Friday, February 19, 2010 Douglas County Superior Court Judge, David Emerson reduced the nine charges to two charges of vehicular homicide and sentenced Otuwa to 15 years for each death. Both Gracie Otuwa and Johnson had just graduated from college the day before the incident. Family members and friends spoke on behalf of not only the victims but the accused Otuwa as well. They implored the judge to sentence Otuwa to a rehabilitation program.
During the holiday season, it’s a time to offer thanks, come together with your friends and family to celebrate the season, and enjoy the holiday celebrations. It’s a time of year when we look forward to celebration. Sadly, holiday cheer can take the wrong turn when individuals who drink and drive cause accidents on the roadways.
Every November and December, auto accidents increase with alcohol consumption being involved. To minimize the tragic loss suffered during the holiday season, we at Murphy & Associates remind you to keep the following in mind:
If you are driving this holiday season, please be responsible for yourself and don’t drink. If you are drinking this holiday season, make sure you have a designated driver to take you home.
If you are planning to attend a holiday party, plan ahead of time to have a designated driver or stay at a hotel or motel nearby the party so you can walk to your destination.
If you are hosting a holiday party, be responsible in serving alcoholic beverages, such as making sure no one leaves and drives under the influence.
If you witness a drunk driver on the roadways at anytime, immediately call your local police department and report the driver’s behavior. Helping one another in keeping drunk drivers off the roadway saves lives.
