The
Atlanta-Journal Constitution recently reported that
automobile fatalities declined in 2008 in 40 states, with
Georgia among the states that experienced declines. According to a "survey of state highway safety agencies" conducted by the
Governor's Highway Safety Association (
GHSA), 44 states and the District of Columbia (D.C.) were surveyed, with the average decline being 10.7 percent among the states.
Georgia saw an even greater decline than the national average:
traffic fatalities in
Georgia decreased by 12 percent. According to these statistics,
fatalities from
automobile accidents may reach their "lowest levels in four decades." Wondering about the causes of the shift?
GHSA executive director Barbara Harsha stated that high gas prices in early 2008 and economic troubles in the second part of the year may account for the change, along with the increased enforcement of traffic laws and the record high use of
seat belts in 2008 of 83 percent.
While these statistics serve as good news for Georgians, more efforts still need to made in order to ensure that drivers are as safe as possible from serious accidents,
auto accident injuries, and death. To us, one
traffic fatality is one too many. If you have experienced the devastating loss of having a loved one die in a
