GA State Patrol Receives Grant for Two DUI Programs

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety has awarded a grant to the Georgia State Patrol to fund two programs dedicated to reducing DUI accidents throughout the state, according to the DUI.com website.  One of the programs, named the "GSP Nighthawks," refers to a group of officers who are highly trained to identify suspected drunk drivers and enforce laws associated with DUI.  In the year 2007, the Nighthawks DUI task force arrested 1,054 metro Atlanta drivers for DUI within Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, Cobb, and Gwinnett Counties.  The second program is an ALS program which aids officers when they testify at hearings for drivers' license suspensions following DUI arrests.  The officers are provided legal counsel and representation as well as training as they prepare to appear at the hearings.  According to the site, both programs began in 2004 and should continue successfully as a result of the new grant.
