According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the state is putting electronic tolls on the HOV lane of I-85 from Chamblee-Tucker Road to Old Peachtree Road. By mid-September, some lanes are expected to start closing but only overnight and on the weekends. The project of the HOV lane is supposed to be completed by July 31, 2010.
The Department of Transportation awarded the $11.7 million contract for physical work on I-85 to World Fiber Technologies of Alpharetta.
As a result, two person carpools will no longer be able to use the lanes for free. Instead, there will be a charge for one or two person carpools. Eventually, three person carpools and transit vehicles will be able to use the high-occupancy toll (HOT) lane for free.
The HOV lane project on I-85 includes an expansion of commuter buses and park and rides lots costing more than $100 million, which will partly be paid for by a federal grant for the HOV lane project. The HOV lanes are also expected to reduce traffic congestion in the area and reduce the number of auto accidents.
