The Department of Transportation (DOT) is still working to re-pave parts of the I-75/ I-85 Connector through downtown Atlanta on nights and weekends, meaning that traffic during the upcoming three-day weekend could cause extreme delays for the 130,000 or more visitors to the Atlanta area for events. According to The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, the Clemson-Alabama football game at the Georgia Dome (which will be featured on ESPN’s College "Game Day") is expected to bring around 100,000 visitors to Atlanta. A local science fiction convention, Dragon Con, could add 30,000 to that number of out-of-town vehicles navigating the downtown connector.
The DOT has suggested that people headed downtown this weekend take the MARTA train or take I-285 to I-20 as an alternative route. Should rain delay the construction, traffic problems may be eased for the weekend, but the re-paving would likely continue for several weekends rather than coming to an end after Labor Day weekend.
