Bryan County Deputy Sgt. Mike Larson was killed while on duty almost two years ago in a fatal car accident, and the at-fault party was sentenced Tuesday, November 4, for causing the accident, according to Jamie Ertle-Durden of the WTOC 11 Savannah website. In December of 2006, Deputy Sgt. Larson was responding to another crash when his vehicle slammed into a stopped car with its lights off in the middle of U.S. Highway 204. Larson’s patrol car then skidded off the roadway into the trees, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The owner of the stopped vehicle, John Smith, had been drinking prior to the crash and had left his car in the middle of the road with no lights on. After the accident, Smith was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and, Tuesday, Chief Judge David Cavender sentenced him on those charges to ten years probation. John Smith will also spend two and one half years in a probation detention center, according to Ertle-Durden.
