According to the NHTSA’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis, in 2009, the use of seat belts in passenger vehicles saved about 12,713 lives. Seat belt restraints have saved more than 72,000 lives in the United States during a 2005 through 2009.

Of the 12,713 lives saved in 2009 by seat belts, 2,381 lives were saved by front air bags in a vehicle, 1,483 lives were saved by helmets on a motorcycle, 623 lives were saved by the drinking age being 21 years of age, and 309 lives were saved by chid restraints.

More lives would be saved if all unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants would buckle up and all motorcyclists wear helmets when operating a motorcycle.
