Moultrie Pedestrian Accident Injures Two

According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), almost 5,000 pedestrians are killed each year due to vehicle-pedestrian accidents, and over 78,000 pedestrians per year sustain injuries from their car-pedestrian or truck-pedestrian accidents.  Last Friday evening, two more pedestrians were injured in a Moultrie area accident.

The Friday night vehicle-pedestrian accident in Moultrie, Georgia, resulted in injuries for a Moultrie woman, who was still in the hospital as of Wednesday, December 10, according to John Oxford of the Moultrie Observer online.  Oxford reports that Cynthia Surls, 42, and a 7-year-old boy were trying to cross Highway 319 on Friday, December 5, when they were struck by a car around 6:53 p.m.  According to the Georgia State Patrol, 33-year-old Laura Roberts was approaching the Shady Grove Road intersection on Highway 319 in Moultrie when she saw the two pedestrians and attempted to stop her Nissan Sentra.  Unable to stop in time, her vehicle hit Cynthia Surls and the young boy and threw them into the air.  One landed in the middle turn lane, while the other landed in the right lane of Highway 319.  After the accident, Surls and the 7-year-old were taken to Thomasville's Archbold Memorial Hospital for treatment.  According to Roberts and three witnesses, the pedestrians ran out into the road, and charges against driver Roberts are still pending until the investigation is complete.
