February 22, 2008 - Local and state citizens are pushing for a change in the Georgia seatbelt law which would require pickup truck drivers and passengers to "buckle up." The current law does not require pickup truck drivers to wear seatbelts. The organization known as Safe Kids is urging passage of the law. The recently deceased and former Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, Thomas Murphy, was primarily responsible for the exemption of the seatbelt law for pickup truck drivers when he was in office. It is hoped that removing the exemption for pickup truck drivers will result in less serious injuries from truck accidents, and help to save lives.
