According to the Insurance Research Council when there is an downturn in the economy people tend to let their auto insurance lapse. With the recent unemployment rates rising the number of insured motorists seem to be declining. On average for every one percent rise in unemployment there is a 0.75 percent increase of uninsured drivers on the Georgia highways and roads. The Insurance Research Council recommends that motorists should talk with their agents and discuss the possibility of increasing their deductibles or lowering their coverage instead eliminating insurance all together. Substantial fines and criminal penalties can result from the failure to maintain auto insurance coverage.
