Police Capture Hit and Run Driver with Help of Witness

In Dawson County, Georgia, last week,  September 2,  five-year-old Omar Gomez was struck by a car as he tried to cross the street to board a school bus that had stopped to pick him up. Of course, when a school bus stops to pick up children, you're supposed to stop, but the driver of a white jeep did not slow down and struck young Omar, knocking him to the ground.  According to his cousin and two sisters, young Omar lay on the ground, but was conscious after the accident and, at first, did not want to go to the hospital in an ambulance. Instead he wanted to go to school because he likes school so much. "Yeah, he likes school, that's why," his cousin said. Gomez was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he was reported in stable condition. This report is according to Kevin Rowson with 11 Alive News.

Ms. DeShan Fishel has just dropped her daughter off at high school and was behind the bus when Omar was hit. "He kept on going and going so I turned around, did a u-turn and took after him," Fishel said. She reportedly followed the jeep while she was on the phone with 911.  Local police said that Ms. Fishel was instrumental in helping them capture the hit-and-run driver.

When told not to let the driver get out of her sight during the 911 call, Ms. Fishel replied, "Oh, I'm not going to. I chased him down. I'm not gonna let him go anywhere." Police called Fishel a hero but, modestly, Fishel said,  "All I could think about was the little kid getting hit and thinking about this person getting away with it."  The suspect who was apprehended and arrested was ninteen-year-old Gary Woosline.  Police charged him with failure to stop and failure to report an accident. His bond for release was twelve hundred dollars.
