Georgia Department of Public Safety announced the New Year’s Holiday travel session will begin on December 30, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. and continue through New Year’s Day. Many people will go out and celebrate with family and friends to bring in the New Year. Local law enforcement wants to remind everyone of the legal drinking age and that drinking and driving do not mix. 

According to Colonel Bill Hitchens with the Georgia Department of Public Safety, the majority of the fatal accidents during last year’s holiday season occurred on the secondary roads such as the state highways and county roads/city streets. Therefore, the law enforcement will be equally divided between the interstates and the secondary roads to discourage unlawful driving. Many holiday accidents are attributed to alcohol and impaired drivers. Unfortunately, those who would not normally take a chance on drinking and driving, often do during this celebration season.

As an added precaution the sheriff of Haralson County, Eddie Mixon is encouraging residents to safeguard their homes and possessions. He advises following precautionary measures such as:

 * Properly breakdown and dispose of Christmas gift boxes such as big screen televisions,  home computers, etc., to avoid advertising what you received this year.

 * Properly store bikes, lawn equipment and other tools out of sight of potential criminals

 * Do not “hide” an extra key to the door of your home. Instead allow a neighbor to have the extra key in case of emergency

 * Engrave valuables, list expensive items with your insurance agent, video your home contents, and try to avoid placing expensive “wanted” items in front of an open window.
