Steer Clear of Red Light Running

June 11, 2008 - You might be in a rush, but you won’t be in a hurry when having to pay the possible consequences of running a red light. The Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration reported through its "Stop Red Light Running" program that 1.8 million crashes in intersections occur each year. In 1998 alone, drivers who ran red lights caused automobile accidents that led to over 80,000 injuries and almost as many as 1,000 deaths (according to federal government statistics).

Just how serious are these statistics? Considering the fact that over half of all United States drivers admit to running a red light, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and drivers alike have great cause for concern. In terms of the likelihood of serious injury or death, this offense is equal to that of drunk driving. The exchange of time at the price of safety is simply too dangerous. By "stopping on red," you may prevent tragic or even fatal injuries that could otherwise occur. In addition to avoiding this temptation when you approach a red light, it is essential that you watch for other drivers who may choose to run red lights due to frustration, "road rage," or, the most common reason, impatience. To ensure your own and others’ safety, always allow yourself plenty of time to reach your desired destination (accounting for possible traffic delays), and pay careful attention to other drivers at intersections.
