According to researchers, the leading cause of death among teens aged fifteen and twenty is lack of driving skills and inexperience.

The National Highway Safety Administration reports that 2,739 drivers between the ages of fifteen and twenty died in car accidents in 2008, down 13.7 percent from 3,174 in 2007 and down 20.2 percent from 3,431 in 1998. In addition, 228,000 teenage drivers were injured in 2008.

The attributed key factor to the drop in fatalities was the enactment in most states of graduated drivers license laws for the youngest teen drivers. Georgia requires a 12-month learner’s permit and restriction on talking on a cell phone while driving.

According to federal agencies, there were more than 208.3 million licensed drivers in the United States as of 2008 and that included 12.9 million drivers between the ages of 16 and 20.
