Ten Tips to Driving Safely in Heavy Fog

Ten Tips to Driving Safely in Heavy Fog
In Georgia

One of the most statistically dangerous driving hazards is heavy fog. Driving with heavy fog is like driving with a blindfold on. Occasionally, certain areas in Georgia, such as Atlanta, Douglas County, Carroll County, and Paulding County, get this heavy fog that makes driving very dangerous.

What is the best advice for driving in the fog is not to drive int it. No matter how important the trip is, it's not worth risking your life. The safest thing to do if you run into fog is to move far off the road and wait for the fog to clear. Yet, sometimes this option isn't always practical, so what are some tips to driving in the fog?

1. Drive with lights on low beam.
High beams will only be reflected back off the fog and actually impair visibility even more.

2. Don't use your emergency flasher.
Studies have shown that drivers are attracted to flashing lights and tend to drive into them inadvertently.

3. Reduce your speed, and watch your speedometer.
Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion when you may actually be speeding. Most fog-related traffic fatalities occur because someone was driving too fast and couldn't stop in time to avoid a collision.

4. Listen for traffic you cannot see.
Open your window a little, to hear better.

5. Use wipers and defrosters as necessary for maximum visibility.

6. Use the right edge of the road or painted road markings as a guide.
This will help you to avoid running into oncoming traffic, or becoming distracted by their headlights.

7. Be patient. Do not pass lines of traffic.

8. Do not stop on a freeway or heavily traveled road.

9. Whatever you do, don't turn off your headlights in heavy fog.

Even if your headlights interfere with your forward visibility a little. Headlights are the only part of your vehicle that oncoming drivers can see at a distance.

10. The best advice we can give is to pull way off the side of the road and wait until the fog lifts, or becomes less dense.

So if you do choose to drive in heavy fog, please use the upmost precaution. Give yourself enough time when leaving home to drive safely and slowly to your destination. No job, appointment, or school function is more important than your safety or the safety of those sharing the road with you.
