According to traffic crash data from last year's Thanksgiving travel period, 13 of the 27 people killed in accidents were not wearing seat belts. Eight of the reported fatalities involved drivers who were driving under the influence. Although Georgia has the highest "safety belt compliance rate" in the southeastern part of the United States, the director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety hopes to reduce many of the traffic fatalities that occur annually by enforcing seat belt laws.
