March 11, 2008 - The Carrollton City Council was presented an analysis of traffic in downtown Carrollton and Bankhead Highway on Monday March 10, 2008. The analyst, Harris Robinson, reported that about 85 percent of the commuters on Bankhead Highway approaching the downtown Square follow the speed limit of 25-30 mph. Robinson is recommending a "road diet" turning the currently three- or four-lane road into a two-way, with a universal turning lane to make the area more pedestrian-friendly. Hopefully, this change will increase the viability in this commercial area.
Two estimates were given to restructure the roadway for the proposed "road diet". It was estimated by Coleman that repainting the street lines would cost $90,000.00, whereas re-paving the road in several areas, which is recommended by the consultant, would cost more than $800,000.00. The City Council will approach local businesses about their opinions.
