Title: Traffic Safety Top Concern During Holiday
The next two weeks you will see an increase in Georgia State Troopers and local officers as well as officers with the Motor Carrier Compliance and Capitol Police Division of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. The beginning of December launched a month long crackdown with the State Patrol targeting impaired drivers, speeders and seat belt violators. There were 46 people who lost their lives in auto accidents in the state of Georgia during this same holiday period in 2008.
Christmas holiday traffic is considered to start on Christmas Eve at 6 pm and end at midnight the following Sunday. For New Year’s the travel period will start December 31 at 6pm and end January 3, 2010.
According to the Douglas County Sentinel, Col. Bill Hitchens, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety wants everyone to enjoy the holiday festivities but to keep traffic safety in mind while operating a motor vehicle. He also emphasized the importance of safety belts and proper restraints for children as well as a designated driver for those who are impaired.
