Rapid growth has hit Carroll County towns Villa Rica and Temple over the past several years, and both mayors have emphasized the advantages of the drastic changes in reports to the Times-Georgian. The U.S. Census Bureau announced its population estimates recently, showing a population double in Temple from 2000 to 2007 and a tripling of Villa Rica’s population over the same seven years. Though Carrollton is growing as well, it has only grown at a rate of approximately five percent over the reported time span. In fact, if population growth occurs at the same rate in each town over the same distribution, Villa Rica will be larger than Carrollton in five years. According to Villa Rica Mayor J. Collins, the steady increase has boosted the town’s economy and provided new opportunities for residents. Temple’s mayor holds a similar view for his town.
Collins, who grew up in Villa Rica, now owns his own business in addition to serving as mayor. As a result, he sees the growth as a chance for residents to do the same, and if not interested in owning their own businesses, they are certainly provided with numerous opportunities for employment. Modern conveniences are a welcome change, also, such as grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping areas. Collins also mentions the positive effect the increase in population will have on the town’s politics: a larger town means a greater amount of influence in political decisions. In addition to these benefits, a larger tax base means greater potential for the city and no unreasonable tax increases to residents.
Though Temple Mayor Rick Ford also sees population growth positively, he assures residents that he will work to keep the "small town feel" that many enjoy.
