Wrong-Way Driver’s Sister-In-Law Says Sleepiness Led to Tragic I-20 Accident

July 9, 2008 - The early morning of July 5 turned tragic in Douglasville as a wrong-way driver on I-20, Otis South, crashed head-on into another car, killing himself and two young mothers. Shannon Lewis, South’s sister-in-law, opened up about the accident Monday, July 7, claiming that South most likely fell asleep at the wheel before the collision. With tears streaming down her face, Lewis spoke of her family’s shock and devastation of their loss and the deaths of the other victims. According to her, Otis South had just dropped his friends off from visiting his wife in the hospital when he mentioned that "he was really tired and he just wanted to sleep in his own bed." Claiming that the coroner informed her that no alcohol was involved in the crash, she expressed the belief that her brother-in-law fell asleep at the wheel before the accident.
