Despite some opposition from several bikers' rights groups, the state of Georgia simply can't ignore the overpowering evidence that helmets do cave lives.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), have collected over 25 years of data on motorcycle accidents. The data shows that using a helmet while riding a motorcycle decreases a biker's risk of sustaining a fatal injury in a motorcycle accident by over 35%.

The type of helmet you wear is important too. A full helmet is 42% effective at preventing death, and 60% effective at preventing head injuries. Riders who wear partial or open helmets were twice more likely to suffer traumatic brain injury than those who wore full helmets.

An interesting fact to note is that motorcycles are less commonly involved in accidents than other vehicles. Between the years 2000-2006, on 0.6% of the accidents that occurred were motorcycle accidents. Yet, 72% of those accidents incurred fatal injuries. After reviewing this data, the State of Georgia decided to make wearing helmets mandatory for all bikers.
