Back injuries are one of the most common injuries we see from auto accidents or on the job. Back injuries range from an acute onset of a muscle strain to a fracture or herniated disc and even a spinal cord injury which results in paralysis.
Diagnosing back injuries can be complicated. The spinal column is nothing more than a stack of bones known as vertabra. Between each of these vertabra are discs, a jelly like substance which acts as a shock absorber so to speak or a cushion. Running down the center of this column lies the spinal cord with bundles of nerves branching out and carrying communication between the brain and the remainder of the body.
As one ages the back or lumbar spines may become “soft” or “weak”. This often leads to what doctors refer to as degenerative changes. These changes effect the body in a subtle or gradual manner. Often times an individual may have a degenerative lumbar condition and not be aware of its presence until the onset of a traumatic event or injury.
A back strain such as a lifting accident at work may effect one or more disc. Often times one may experience immediate and excruciating pain while lifting a heavy object or when thrown about suddenly as when in an auto accident. The pain is often described as radiating down one leg or the other. This is usually accompanied by a numbness and tingling type sensation. These are indicative of a herniated disc. Fractures of the vertabra have varying degrees of complexity as well. Some require surgery which may involve plates to stabilize the spinal column while others may be managed simply without surgical intervention. The most life altering and devastating back injury would be one that leads to paralysis. These type of back injuries happen when the spinal cord is compromised.
Seeking appropriate medical treatment and a possible consultation with an orthopaedic specialist / spinal specialist may be necessary when one has sustained a back injury. Obtaining appropriate information is the best way for a patient to make decisions concerning his / her injury.
