More properly referred to as a cervical fracture, a broken neck can be an extremely dangerous injury. Cervical fractures result from a break in any of the seven cervical vertebrae in the spinal column. In order for vertebrae to become fractured, significant force must be applied to the area, which is why traffic accidents and falls are the most common causes of cervical fractures. Other areas of the spine (called the thoracic, lumbar, and sacral areas) are often injured in auto accidents, as well, but they are somewhat well-protected from injury by the torso. The neck (or cervical area of the spine) is more vulnerable to fractures and other injuries since it is only protected by small muscles and ligaments.
In order to diagnose a neck injury, x-rays, CT scans, and MRIs may be performed to expose any fractures or other neck abnormalities. It is essential to immobilize the head and neck before ever moving a patient with a neck injury. Although broken necks can lead to paralysis, a loss of sensation, or even death, they do not always cause such severe results. Just as ranges in injury may vary after receiving a blow or trauma to the neck, ranges in treatment exist. Some victims of broken necks require surgery; others need to wear a neck brace, and some require more minor treatment.
