Proposed Georgia Cell Phone Law Could Prevent Serious and Fatal Accidents Caused by Teen Drivers

A proposal has been made for a new Georgia law that would ban drivers ages 17 and under from using cell phones while driving (neither texting or calling would be allowed), according to Cal Calloway and John Shireck of the 11 Alive website. Should the proposal become a law, teenage drivers within the stated age bracket who are found at-fault in accidents would have their licenses suspended for 90 days. According to the website, 17 other states and the District of Columbia have all passed cell phone restrictions for teenage drivers. Georgia legislators are scheduled to discuss the proposal and, possibly, vote on it during January's legislative session. Introduced by Representative Matt Ramsey, the House plan is intended to keep young Georgia drivers from being distracted and causing serious or fatal accidents. Exceptions to the "no texting or calling" law would be emergencies like life-threatening situations or a the need to call to report a hazard in the road.

After the first offense, violators would be fined as much as $150 and receive one point on their driving records, with points and fines increasing with each violation. Teenage drivers under 18 who cause accidents (and are named at-fault) while violating the cell phone use law would face the 90-day suspension of their drivers' licenses. Those who violate the law and are found at-fault in an accident for a second time would lose their drivers' licenses for six months. Ramsey told 11Alive News that "five thousand teen drivers are killed every year . . . because of distractions" such as text messaging and making calls on their cell phones.
