Greenstick Fractures in Children

I always found it interesting that almost everyday growing up I was outside playing with friends and at times even playing some very rough sports. I was fortunate enough to have never fractured or broken a bone. However, for my two sons who spend the majority of their leisure time playing video games and are only occasionally outside playing with their friends, have both suffered a greenstick fracture of their forearms. I remember each of them spending up to 6 weeks in a cast recouping from their fractures.

We have also represented clients, mostly children, who have suffered from this type of fracture while slipping and falling in a store or being struck by a vehicle in a pedestrian accident. An interesting thing that has stood out in the clients who have suffered this type of injury is that the injury may not immediately be apparent after the initial fall. In fact with regard to one client I represented, the child did not report an immediate problem until the swelling, bruising and limited range of motion appeared later. The child then began to complain of pain thus prompting the parents to return to the emergency room for another check up. After x-rays were taken the fracture then became apparent. For purposes of discerning how an injury occurred can be difficult because of this delay in diagnosis to relate the injury back to the original fall. However; through expert testimony from the child’s medical doctor we were able to tie the injury to a specific fall the child had after being hit by a car.
