Nearly half of all fractures sustained by adults are fractures of the arm. Commonly referred to as a "broken arm," the injury can refer to a break or crack in the humerus, radius, or ulna bones in the arm. The humerous, which connects the shoulder to the elbow, is the largest bone in the arm. The radius and ulna connect with the humerus and extend to the wrist to form the "forearm."
Regardless of the location of a fracture, most broken arms result from one of two causes: falls or direct trauma. One of the most common occurrences of direct trauma is a car accident. If you have been involved in a car accident in which you experienced severe pain, swelling, obvious differences between the injured arm and the other, lack of mobility, and/ or some loss of feeling, you should consult a medical professional immediately. Upon consulting a physician, you will be examined for nerve damage, possible fractures, or damage to your blood vessels. Checking for fractures in one’s arm typically involves the use of an x-ray machine, which will take pictures of a minimum of two bones in the arm. Though most x-rays reveal any existing fractures, in some cases, fractures will only appear in MRI reports or CT scans.
Once it is determined that you have a fracture, you will most likely receive a splint, partial cast, or sling. Your physician will prescribe pain medications for you and recommend using ice at home to reduce swelling. If your fracture is severe, you may not be sent home immediately. Such cases are less common and involve bones that appear through the skin, nerve or blood vessel damage, or multiple breaks. In either case, most victims of broken arms will follow-up with an orthopaedic doctor to determine further courses of action for healing: frequent office visits, surgery, or another method of treatment.
