According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 148,000 motorcyclists have died in traffic accidents since the enactment of the Highway Safety and National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966.

Motorcycle Involvement in Accidents

In the year 2008, 2,554 motorcycles were involved in fatal accidents which involved colliding with another type of motor vehicle. In two-vehicle accidents, seventy seven percent of the motorcycles involved were struck in the front. Only seven percent were struck in the rear.

Motorcycles are more likely to be involved in a fatal crash with a fixed object than any other vehicle. Also, in the year 2008, twenty five percent of the motorcycles involved in fatal accidents collided with fixed objects in the roadway, compared to nineteen percent for passenger vehicles, fourteen percent for light trucks and four percent for large trucks.

Alcohol
In 2008, a higher percentage of motorcyclists had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 grams or higher than any other type of motor vehicle driver. The percentages for vehicle drivers involved in fatal accidents were twenty nine percent for motorcycles, twenty three percent for passenger vehicles, twenty three percent for light trucks and two percent for large trucks.
