August 10, 2011 - Carroll County, GA - In an effort to improve communication between all of the departments involved in disaster response, Carroll County schools are rolling out a new Emergency Operations Plan.
On July 23rd, the Times-Georgian.com reported that the plan was a collaborative effort between the Carroll County School Board, Sheriff's Office, FEMA officials, and Carroll County Emergency Management. A training session held by FEMA's Emergency Management Institute in November 2010 trained the team that built the plan.
Among the changes in the new plan, which goes into effect this 2011-2012 school year, is an improvement in communication. A common language for reporting and responding to disasters such as severe weather will be used so all emergency personnel will know more about the situation.
Better access to school buildings was also a concern, and the 24 facilities in Carroll County were mapped with locations of vital utilities and exits. A list of who is in charge of each part of emergency actions was established to provide a solid chain of command for how information is communicated down the line. This will help get clear information to emergency responders, as well as parents and students.
Your child's school is responsible for taking every measure possible to prevent your child from being harmed in an emergency situation. These improvements to the Carroll County schools' current emergency protocol are aimed at improving their response to emergencies to offer better protection to your child while they are at school.
