Memorial Day weekend is upon us and with it comes increased travel and traffic. Historically there are more accidents, speeding violations, and drunk driving incidents reported around the holidays than other times of the year. In response to this, Georgia law enforcement is again stepping up its patrol of our highways.
The Times-Georgian reports that the 100 Days of Summer Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic campaign will finish its first week this holiday weekend. The initiative began its eighth year on May 23 and will continue through the summer to help reduce the amount of accidents on Georgia highways.
Police in Carroll County and across the state will be targeting speeders, drunk drivers, and aggressive drivers. Recently added to their list of dangerous behaviors is texting while driving, which falls into the impaired driver category.
Driving while under the influence of alcohol is another 1 of the major concerns during the summer months. This is because many Georgians participate in activities where alcohol is present, leading to more drunk drivers and potential accidents.
Motorists should be extra careful when traveling during holiday weekends due to the higher volume of traffic and more chances of impaired drivers. While increased police presence will help matters, it is up to every Georgia driver to exercise caution at all times to prevent serious or fatal car accidents.
