Two Metro Atlanta Teenagers Die in Madison County Car Wreck
Description: Two teenagers– a volunteer fireman and his girlfriend– died the afternoon of July 5 on Highway 281 after their vehicle ran off the shoulder of the road, slid a total of 180 feet, and overturned. Hart County resident Erik Peeples, 18, was driving on the highway around 5:15pm with his girlfriend, 17-year-old Brittni Gawan, in the passenger seat. His car slid 80 feet in one direction when it ran off the road’s shoulder, followed by another 100 feet in the opposite direction. The vehicle overturned, slammed into a fence and two trees, and ejected Peeples. Girlfriend Gawan was partially ejected from the vehicle and died at the accident scene. Peeples died July 6 after being airlifted to Grady Hospital.
Triple Fatality Hits I-20 in Douglasville Over Holiday Weekend
Description: Early Saturday morning (July 5), travelers on I-20 in Douglasville near the Cobb-Douglas County line witnessed tragedy as a fiery wrong-way accident killed three young metro Atlanta residents. Mableton’s Otis South, 41, was going the wrong-way on the interstate (heading west on I-20 East) around 1:45am when his Lincoln Continental slammed head-on into a white Pontiac Sunbird containing three young women. Fatima Bird, a 22-year-old Douglasville resident and driver of the Sunbird, was killed instantly upon impact. Her close friend, 26-year-old Melisa (Lisa) Sinkfield of Atlanta, died soon after as she was being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. South's car burst into flames, and he died soon after.
Chain-Reaction Crash Kills 2, Injures 6 on I-75 in Atlanta
Description: Around 4:30 Sunday morning (July 6), a three-car pile up caused by a stalled car on I-75 near Cleveland Avenue turned tragic. According to reports, another vehicle hit the stalled car from behind, which pushed the stalled car onto the shoulder of the interstate. The second car stopped in one of the lanes, and its three passengers stepped out of the vehicle. When a third car came upon the accident, it struck two of the three passengers and killed them. Six other people were injured, and one of them is in critical condition. No alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident.
21-Year-Old Indicted for Killing Limo Driver and Passengers on I-85 in Atlanta
Description: Gainesville resident Carmon “Cody” Rhoden was speeding on I-85 on March 31 near Indian Trail Road when he hit a limousine that was en-route to its passengers’ home from the Atlanta airport. The crash turned deadly. The limo driver and all three passengers (a Lawrenceville family) were killed by the wreck, and Rhoden has now been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide among other charges.
Six Flags Over Georgia Trip Turns Fatal for High School Student
Description: On a summer trip to the Atlanta area with his church and family from South Carolina, 17-year-old rising high school senior Asia LeeShawn Ferguson IV was killed by a ride at Six Flags Over Georgia. According to reports, the teenager and his cousin scaled two 6-foot fences in an attempt to take a shortcut for re-entering the park after lunch. The fences near “Batman the Ride” had signs on and around them reading, “restricted area,” “authorized personnel only,” “danger zone,” and “do not enter.” Several witnesses made phone calls to 911 when the ride struck the young student, known by friends and family as “LeeShawn,” and decapitated him.
